The Central Valley Sunday Morning Hiking Club - Sector Prusia

As we've said before, the weather here is pretty much perfect. It inspires you to get outside. Since we're a pretty active family, we've made it a point to maximize our time here by seeing as much of this beautiful country as possible. Over the past 9 months, our free time has been spent traveling to the postcard-worthy Pacific beaches of Manuel Antonio, Uvita and Dominical, up La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano, and all points in between.

Some of the trips above require a bit of effort, planning and expense as they are over two hours by car from where we live. With this in mind, we wanted to create opportunities for exploration a bit closer to home. And we wanted to invite our friends along (expats and Ticos alike). Hence, the Central Valley Sunday Morning Hiking Club was born. Maybe we need to shorten the name. That's a mouthful.

As the name suggests, we choose a place in the central valley and meet up for some hiking and exploration on Sunday mornings, to be followed by food, of course. Last week took us to an expansive park on the slopes of Irazu Volcano known as Sector Prusia. Up above 9000 ft, the entrance trail requires a bit of stamina at first, then it levels off somewhat into a surprisingly alpine trail, known as Los Abuelos (the grandparents), which winds through towering conifers and is somewhat reminiscent of John Muir Woods in Northern California.

Los Abuelos trail comes to an end at a jaw-dropping panoramic view of the valley.

We then explored Los Robles trail, which winds around the back side of Irazu's caldera through an expansive sunny meadow.

Overall, our first outing was a great success (said in Borat voice)! Next up, Orosi Valley...
