Seen Around the Central Valley - Part 1

We live in Costa Rica's lush central valley, to the east of the capital, San Jose. This is home to most of Costa Rica's population and the climate is perfect. It's usually in 70's during the day and gets cooler in the evenings. We have no need for heating or air conditioning! We leave our windows open with no screens all year round as there are very few insects (at least the annoying kind) at this elevation.

Living above 4000 ft. took a little getting used to, since we've lived at sea level all our lives. The views are incredible, as we are surrounded by gorgeous green hills that typically have waves of fluffy clouds spilling over them. We moved here during the rainy season and didn't realize until the weather finally broke that we live at the foot of Irazu volcano, which rises to over 11,000 ft.!

Aside from the natural beauty around us, here are some other things that one can experience while living in the valley. These seem to be constants:

1. Dogs. And more dogs. We've read that there are over more than 1 million street dogs, or "zaguates" across the country. More on zaguates later.
2. Something's always on fire somewhere.
3. There's always a late model Toyota driving around with a makeshift PA speaker grafted to the roof, blaring some incomprehensible Spanish gibberish.
4. There's always some high school marching band (or maybe just the drumline) reverberating off the hillsides.

Tico flavor. Pura vida, Mae!

A view of the valley on the road to Irazu. Trust me, there's something on fire down there somewhere.
